[Food] Vikings World Street Food

I love to explore the world not just viewing it through pictures, watching it through the television, but tasting the different food it offers.  As I go out and explore the world through travelling,  aside from seeing their famous sights, knowing a bit of their culture, shopping for some goodies, my first priority as always is to taste its food, especially its street food. But since I don’t get to frequently travel the world, I guess tasting its food through dining in restaurants which offers different dishes and through this World street food would suffice for now.

This August, Vikings SM Lanang Premiere brings you World Street Food. Here are the Menu:

Tacos Al Pastor (Mexico)- Is a dish developed in Central Mexico, an adaptation of the shawarma spit-grilled meat brought by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. Similar to Turkish Kebab & Greek gyros, but this one is made from thin strips of pork marinated in spices, chilies and stacked onto a long spit called a trompo. This is very flavorful, one of my favorite dish during the food tasting. –MUST TRY!  IMG_20150723_181158 Rou Jia Mo (China)-  means meat burger, is a street food originating from Shaanxi Province and now widely consumed all over China. The meat is most commonly pork, stewed for hours in a soup containing over 20 spices and seasonings. This is somewhat similar to “Cua Pao” or ” Hong Ma Pao”.       IMG_20150723_181441 Espetinho (Brazil)-  A  Portugese word which means “little skewer” and is the word that Brazilian use to describe what is known in English as Kebab. For the food tasting, we had Seafood kebab, which had fish, shrimps, mushrooms and the sauce under the kebab that was sweet n tangy.      IMG_20150723_181516 Pork Satay (Indonesia)- Satay is a dish seasoned , skewered and grilled meat, served with sauce. It may consist of diced or sliced of different meats, the more authentic version uses skewers from the midrib of the coconut palm frond. These are grilled or barbecued over a wood or charcoal fire, then served with variety of spicy seasonings. Satay originated in Java, Indonesia. Its the national dish of Indonesia. This  grilled pork satay is dipped in peanut curry sauce, I like the taste of the mixture of the peanut curry dip. –MUST TRY!    IMG_20150723_182029

Suppli (Italy)-  An Italian snacks consisting of rice ball, generally risotto, w/ tomato sauce, and raw egg. This rice balls contains rice, mozzarella cheese, tomato, a bit of meat, something new to my tastebuds.

Jerk Chicken (Jamaica)-  Jerk is a style of cooking native  to Jamaica in which meat is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice.  The chicken was flavorful and a bit spicy, the rice was also flavorful, a bit strong taste.. both are my favorite during the food tasting- MUST TRY!

IMG_20150723_183240Durum (Turkey)- A wrap that is usually filled with typical doner kebab ingridients. The wrap is made from lavash or yufka flatbread. This one is somewhat similar to shawarma.       IMG_20150723_185635

Crepe (France)- is a type of very think pancake made from wheat flour or buckwheat flour.  You can put fresh fruits, jams, meats or other sauces for savory crepes. As for this, we were served crepe with banana & nutella topped with ice cream to cap off our World Street Food tour.

Now, we can explore the world through the food of this various countries.

[Food] Vikings Davao Kadayawan Menu

Vikings Davao launches its Kadayawan Menu, in preparation for next week’s Kadayawan Celebration. Kadayawan is a celebration of Fruits harvest in Davao. In line with the celebration, they are featuring a line-up of dishes that has a Taste of Davao. Its a good time to celebrate Kadayawan with Family and Friends by dining at Vikings SM Lanang Premiere Davao.

I was happy that once again I was invited to another round of food tasting by Vikings. Well, I would say it was another first for me, since I get to taste some of the dishes that I don’t really get to try.  Here are what we had during the Food Tasting:

Balut ala Pobre Pate -It was my first time to try this since I really don’t eat Balut. since I really have to try this for this food review, I have to convince myself, and I think Balut Pate wasn’t that bad after all. For Balut lovers, this is something you’ll want to try.

Bagnet Salad (MUST TRY!) – This is one of my favorite during the Food tasting, its Bagnet, a popular Ilocano dish mixed with greens, its like eating Bagnet minus the oiliness or in (Tagalog its called “Umay”) since the salad is a good complement to the bagnet.

Ensaladang Talong with Malunggay Pesto (MUST TRY!) -Salad made from grilled eggplant, vinegar, tomatoes and onions. this starter is good since the Spicy Malunggay Pesto compliments with the Eggplant salad.

 Piniritong Lumpiang Tinapa at Mangga (MUST TRY!) – If your fond of eating green mangoes, mango n tinapa mix goes well-together, its like having green mango n bagoong in one dish.

Vikings Special Kinilaw – A mix of tuna ceviche, grilled pork, veggies and Davao Pomelo.

Molo Soup – A Filipino soup made from pork dumplings and chicken or pork broth.

Balbacua– its a popular dish that is made of cow/ buffalo skin and meat boiled for hours to make it tender. It was another first for me to try this.

Baked Imbao with Spinach (MUST TRY!) – Imbao is known in Davao, this baked Imbao is really good, reminds me of baked oysters and spinach dip mixed together.

Baby Back Ribs in Durian BBQ Sauce (MUST TRY!)– Grilled Baby back ribs with durian BBQ Sauce, the durian isn’t too strong, you get to taste both the bbq sauce and the durian flavor. Another dish with a twist of Davao flavor.

Rellenong Manok with Mangosteen Sauce– Stuffed chicken something similar to the usual home-made meat loaf with Mangosteen Sauce, the sweet mangosteen sauce gives a twist to the stuffed chicken.

Bihod Pasta (MUST TRY!)–  Bihod, Female tuna Egg is mixed with Olive oil, a unique pasta dish. Its my first time to taste Tuna Egg.

Spicy Baked Calderetang Kambing- another first to try this dish since I don’t eat kambing, this dish is flavorful with a modern twist by adding mozzarella cheese.

Beef Steak Tagalog (MUST TRY!) –  For steak lovers, try this Filipino version of beef steak.. Its juicy & flavorful!

Ginataang Alimango– Fiesta or Lauriats aren’t complete without the King of Seafood.. the crabs! Try Vikings version of crabs in Coconut Milk, spicy yet with a twist of  coconut milk!

Mango Sans Rival – A feast wouldn’t be complete without desserts, as the desserts were served, we were so excited to taste them. One of the desserts that caught my attention is this Mango Sansrival, not too sweet too!

After months of waiting as to when Vikings will open, finally it had its soft opening a few weeks back. We were all wondering as to why people are patiently lining up and willing to wait just to try Vikings. Then finally our turn came, we were all excited to dine. As our family is a foodie bunch, we were told to be there by 5:30pm, to avoid our reservation cancellation. There were various food stations that were found inside, they are the Filipino, American, Japanese, Chinese, Korean & Mediterranean food. They also have the Carving stations, Anti-pasti, pasta station and other food from different parts of the world.

When your inside, its not just your tummy that is feasting, as your eyes are also feasting as everything is displayed right before you. Its indeed a feast fit for a king, a freedom for diners to choose as to what they like and eat like a viking!

Place: the restaurant is at the SM Lanang Premiere Mall, its very accessible.

Verdict: The place has a homey ambiance, the chef’s and waiters were friendly, service was really good. The food was great, though there were too many choices. I would love to go back and try more! 😀

I didn’t just only enjoyed the food feast, I also had fun watching the group of waiters who sang and dance as they greet diners who had celebrated their birthdays at Vikings.

During the Kadayawan week last August 13,2013 Starbucks had invited us bloggers, to a night of Coffee tasting/latest Lunch Sandwiches launch & Starbucks Card launch at their SM Lanang Premiere branch. It was a night of fun, prizes, surprises & food tasting for us. I was excited to attend this as it was the 1st Starbucks event in Davao. I’m not much of a coffee lover but I love hanging out on coffee shops with friends and try their non-coffee drink/ food.

The healthy eaters, food lovers and  starbucks regulars would be raving as Starbucks presents their 5 new Lunch sandwiches that would definitely satisfy not just the health-conscious foodies but also everyone who loves to try out something new every once in a while. Here are the latest on their menu:

Salami & Cheese on Marbled Rye Bread @ P165– Soft & Chewy bread with a sliced of salami, provolone and cheddar cheese. This combination is really good. Definitely one of my fave.

Spinach Artichoke and Mushroom on Herbed Multi-grain bread (MUST TRY!) @ P160– A vegetarian sandwich with a delicious blend of cheese, spinach, artichoke, mushrooms, garlic n onions. Its a healthy sandwich that is not just healthy but also tasty.

Bacon & Cheese on Herbed Ciabatta Bread (MUST TRY!) @ P165- Grilled cheese sandwich coupled with 6 types of cheeses and crispy bacon strips w/ seasoned creamy pesto sauce on Herbed Ciabatta bread. Its the ultimate comfort food that is sinfully delicious. Its the first sandwich I tasted during the food tasting that got me the “love at first bite” vote. Definitely a must-try.

Classic Tuna & Cheese on Dark Ciabatta Bread @ P175– Healthy classic tuna dill salad, slices of hard-boiled egg & creamy melted cheese  on a toasted Ciabatta bread. It may look like a chocolate bread, but its ciabatta bread. Its one classic sandwich which is healthy and a meal on its own.

Roasted Chicken Pesto and Shitake  Mushroom on Flat bread @ P165–  Juicy roasted chicken breast fillet tossed with pesto mayo sauce and Shitake mushrooms with 2 types of cheeses on grilled flat bread. It somehow taste oriental due to the shitake mushrooms. Its something unique to try.

I usually visit Starbucks, order a drink or a slice of dessert, haven’t tried any of their sandwiches. It was just a few weeks back that I get to taste and appreciate the sandwiches that are in their menu.

Aside from the 5 new sandwiches,  they also presented the Starbucks VIA ready Brew that are made from responsibly grown and ethically sourced high quality Arabica beans. Roasted and brewed according to Starbucks standards.

Archipelago 7107 by Barrio Fiesta

Through the years, Davao has been booming. With the opening of 3 malls during the last few years, I can say that restaurants from Manila, Cebu and other places around the Philippines are confident in opening their branch here in Davao. With a number of new restaurants here, we would not need to go places just to dine on our favorite restaurants outside of the city. One of the new restaurant which just had opened here is Archipelago 7107 by Barrio Fiesta. Last July 31,2013 Archipelago has its grand opening.

How Archipelago 7107 started:

For years, most Filipino restaurants in the country serves only their perspective regional recipes. The north has the Kampampangan recipes which gave us Sisig & Pinakbet, the south has given us Inasal na Manok and Kanin sa Puso, but not many Filipino restaurants have given us all of these recipes under one roof. Thus the idea of Archipelago 7107 by Barrio Fiesta was born. The concept of serving authentic recipes from anywhere in between the 7107 islands under one menu, therefore giving the customer a wider range of choices than your normal Filipino restaurants. Aside from the loved Barrio Fiesta recipes, such as the Crispy Pata, Kare-kare and Pinakbet, our chef will offer rare delicacies once in a while.

The ambience of the resto is casual and chic, not the traditional bamboo decor most Filipino restaurants are known for. As for the prices of the food it goes from around P120-695 per dish which is good for 2-4 persons.

Archipelago 7107 by Barrio Fiesta is a brainchild of young entrepreneurs Antero Sison III, Carlo Lorenzana, Alberto Bacani and Alan Bangco who teamed up with the 3rd generation restauranteur Tyrone Ongpauco from the Barrio Fiesta chain of restaurants.  The restuarant will cater to families for celebrations and gatherings, young professionals wanting to unwind with friends. After dinner, Archipelago 7107 transforms into a full blown lounge bar, eager to please the discerning partyphile.
